Support During 6 & Under Practice

    Hi PHSC Families,

We’re so grateful for your support and the trust you place in us each season. As we get deeper into practices, we want to share a few friendly reminders that help our swimmers stay confident, focused, and ready to grow.

    • Parents should avoid hovering on deck or stretching with swimmers during practice.
      • We suggest parents not sit or stand on the concrete near the shallow end - please move behind the lounge chairs in the grass - close by but not too close.
      • Staying TOO close by can make swimmers feel like there’s something to be scared of.
    • Sideline coaching or correcting can unintentionally undermine the coaches and cause confusion.
      • Please let our coaching team lead your swimmers.
      • We need swimmers fully focused on their coaches during practice.
      • Children can tell when parents are nervous and they carry that to the pool
      • Please be excited WITH them to try new things during swim team practices
      • CHEER for, CELEBRATE and REWARD ALL the little wins with them
      • We will CELEBRATE all their wins with them!!
    • Practices are a chance for swimmers to try new and hard things with support from their coaches.
      • This will help them trust their coaches, they are all trained for safety first!
      • They may struggle & that’s ok - we will BE WITH THEM the WHOLE TIME!
      • We will do our best to push them to do hard things, but not push safety!
      • These moments help kids learn to trust another adult & build independence.
    • We coach for confidence - our goal is to make them feel SAFE with our coaches.
      • We can’t lessen their stress but teach them to cope & overcome their fears with practical solutions using games and toys.
      • Confidence comes from practice!!
        • Practice being scared and doing it anyway - these will be the BIG WINS!
    • Play & exposure during practice help build confidence and strong relationships.
      • We encourage you to allow your swimmer independence during play times, too.
      • Those are times where they will test and explore their new skills and build endurance & confidence at the same time.
      • Swimmers learn by watching others and playing!!
    • We will always give your child a chance to say they aren’t ready, but we will encourage them EVERY time to TRY.
      • If a swimmer is unwilling to take their turn, we will ask them to sit on the steps for safety until we can return to them.
      • If they continue to be unwilling to participate, we may send them back to you.
      • We will do our best to come talk with you about support and help for your child—please just WAIT until all swimmers and coaches have exited the water.

We are HONORED your chose our swim team —please TRUST US and allow us to do our jobs with your children!

Thank you for partnering with us and cheering on your swimmers in all the right ways. We’re excited for everything this season will bring.

    Warmly, PHSC Coaching Team
